More than just a Market.

The Eumundi Markets are more than just a market, with magical experiences every way you turn. You will be enchanted with the sounds of our wonderful musicians and swoon to the delights of the diverse cuisine that is available. The art and craft stalls are unique in Australia, and our fresh produce is second to none. So why not come along and enjoy the experience of Australia's largest market.

The markets were established in early 1979 and were the brainchild of two local women after having visited the community market at Kin Kin. Sitting on the steps of a store in Memorial Drive in the solitude created by the diversion of the Bruce Highway around their town, they decided that Eumundi was to have a Market.

The Eumundi Historical Association became the community umbrella to facilitate the formation of the Markets, and thus was born these now famous markets which virtually take over the township of Eumundi every Wednesday from 8am – 1pm and Saturday 6:30am to 2pm

Initially the Market revolved around the CWA Hall with the kitchen being the heart of the Market, and where one could find a cup of tea or coffee, juices and exotic foods, and be enchanted by an endless stream of changing faces. The magnificent Moreton Bay fig trees that were there are a feature of these world famous markets to this very day.

The Market has now grown from its humble beginnings to cover a 2.5 acre site and accommodate over 600 stalls. In the early days everyone visiting the market seemed to buy equal portions of fruit, vegetables, arts, and crafts. Now, the Eumundi Market experiences two distinct waves of customers – the locals from surrounding areas including restaurateurs who descend almost as soon as the marketers begin trading, and the tourists who generally rise much later and arrive at the Market around 10am

The locals and restaurateurs come for the home-grown fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs. Much of this food is organically grown and in such demand that the customers help the marketers unload in the dark. The tourists come for the arts and crafts which more often than not are made by the people who sell them, and which is now a condition of entry into the Markets. It is the connection between the maker, the goods, the seller, and the customer that creates the fascinating mix of Eumundi Market.

Funds raised from the site fees collected each Market Day from stallholders go directly to the Eumundi Historical Association where they are managed for the benefit of the Market, the Museum, The School of Arts, and community projects including the local school, tennis club, fire brigade, and individuals in need of support to attend sporting competitions or cultural exchanges.

The progress of the Market since it began more that 25 years ago has been phenomenal, and what is most amazing is the fact that the Market has maintained its character. Even the staunchest critics of the way in which the Market dominates their Wednesdays and Saturdays concede that it has been good for the town.
