The International Rally of Queensland is the opening event of the NEC Computers Australian Rally Championship. It has been organised by the Brisbane Sporting Car Club for the past 37 years and has been based on the Sunshine Coast since 1995. The competitive stages of the Rally are held in Imbil State Forest, an easy one-hour drive north of Rally headquarters which are situated at the Surf Air Resort at Marcoola. Cars contesting the Australian Rally Championship and Queensland Rally Championship rounds cover a total of 206 kilometres in 17 timed special stages over Saturday and Sunday. The Classic rally cars tackle a shorter course. The Imbil stages are tight and technically challenging, rewarding brave drivers but also able to turn the slightest mistake into catastrophe. The service park in the Imbil township offers fans almost as much entertainment as the Spectator Park in the forest as crews rush to repair and service their cars in limited time.
On the final day the event finishes in the Imbil State Forest followed by the podium awards presentation at the Surf Air Resort at Marcoola Beach. A one-hour coverage of Coates Rally Queensland is shown nationally on Network Ten two weeks after the event.
